We All Stumble

Normally, I am full of “let’s go!” energy at the turn of the year. I race into the year, making plans rather than leaving my life to chance. I have books to finish writing, books I long to read, birds to chase, and National Parks to visit. I need to put everything on my schedule. But this year, I’m struggling to make those plans.

There are some obvious reasons for this. The improvements in my health that filled me with so much hope have faded. While I’m better now than I have been in years, my insomnia has returned. In October, we said goodbye to our beloved 16-year-old dog and I’m still grieving. And in a few weeks, America will have a new-old president.

Women in bathing costumes in Pacific Ocean at Moclips, August 23, 1913 from the University of Washington Libraries Digital Collections with an Emily Kimbrough quote across the sky.

Instead of running ahead, I feel like I’ve dropped out of the race completely. I’ve lost my rhythm and my mojo. I’ve tripped and fallen, and I’m having a hard time getting up.

In times such as these, I lean on the wisdom of others. I challenge myself to be kind, because I’m not the only frightened, hurting person out there. Giving and receiving kindness makes our days easier and lighter. Kindness helps us move forward.

My current kindness mantra:

Remember, we all stumble, every one of us. That’s why it’s a comfort to go hand in hand.
~Emily Kimbrough

  1. Ah, Kit. I’m so sorry to learn about Dory’s travel over the bridge. Losing a beloved dog, or any pet, is absolutely the hardest thing to get through. I think you met Regan, our cream Standard. I still grieve her passing and it’s been 10 years. At least I can laugh more about her antics most of the time rather than tear up (doing it now). We were only dogless for 4 months before getting a puppy. Not the solution for everyone but was what my husband and I decided to do; the house was too quiet.

    1. Thanks for your kind words. I’ve lost lots of pets over the years but I don’t think any of them ever hit me this hard. We dog-sat for friends over the holidays. When asked how it went, my husband said “We’re not ready yet.” I imagine we’ll get another dog some day but it won’t be soon. (Unless the universe surprises us…)

  2. Oh, boy! I’m so sorry you’re going through such a difficult time. Losing a fur baby is the absolutely worst and hurts so badly! Here’s hoping 2025 breathes new positive energy into your world. ((((Hugs))))
