Dephemerember 2023: Salvaged Birds

The second prompt for Dephemerember 2023 was “Salvaged Birds.”

As a quilter, I have plenty of fabric selvages (the bound edge on fabric when you buy it by the yard) lying around and the word salvage made me think of selvage. I wound up making a purple collage of fabric selvages then adding yellow bird photos for contrasting focal points.

Two junk journal pockets made from purple collages of fabric selvages with yellow bird photos (one positive and one negative) on top.
Two pockets made with bird photos and collaged fabric selvages.

While I did cover the backs with paper, I realized that all the sewing will make them too lumpy to write on the back, so I will be using them as pockets or tuck spots. Or possibly notebook covers. Something like that.

The front and back of two journal pockets. The front has a photo of a goldfinch glued onto a fabric collage made of fabric selvages. The back shows pale green paper with machine stitching around the edges.
I put paper on the back of both pockets to cover the stitching.

Another very simple approach, but I love the results.

Do selvages count as salvage?

    1. It is! I love sewing on paper… It’s an odd thing to do but I trust it more than glue, so I do it whenever I can.
