The True Meme-ing of Christmas

Maybe I’ve been spending too much time on social media, but my holiday preparation surprises keep reminding me of movie scenes. Here’s my a tongue-in-cheek pictorial guide to emotions of the holiday season using some of my favorite movies to explain them.

How I think my shopping is going to go:

Man on ladder in candy shop throwing candy to waiting children.
Aubrey Wood as the Candy Man in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971).

How it actually goes:

Creepy child catcher disguised as a colorful candy man, talking to an unsuspecting child.
Robert Helpmann as the terrifying Child Catcher/Candy Man in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968).

How I feel when I’m shopping for others but find something perfect for me:

Old hobbit (Bilbo Baggins) looking covetously at a golden ring. The words "Why shouldn't I keep it?" in on corner.
Ian Holm as Bilbo Baggins in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

How I feel when the store I sought out fails to have what I hoped for:

Teenaged girl with shocked expression surrounded by toys and sentimental belongings. Words "It's all junk!" above image.
Jennifer Connelly as Sarah in Labyrinth (1986).

When I finally find what I was looking for:

Young boy staring open-mouthed at a golden ticket.
Peter Ostrum as Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971).

When I finally find an online gift that will be delivered before December 24th:

Smiling, glowing, blue-haired girl in green dress with arms raised in excitement
Joy from Inside Out (2015).

How I feel when I order that gift and the delivery date is suddenly sometime next April:

Short scowling red man in shirt, slacks, and tie with fists clenched.
Anger from Inside Out (2015).

How I feel when I can’t find anyway to edit or cancel the order:

Screaming red man in shirt, tie, and slacks with arms raised and fire coming off the top of his head.
Anger completely losing it. (Inside Out, 2015)

How I feel when the order is in fact canceled:

Young boy (Harry Potter) staring in surprise at the wand in his hand (in a dusty shop).
Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001)

How I feel when all the Christmas stuff is finally done:

Luke Skywalker and Han Solo wearing medals, Princess Leia behind them, everyone smiling.
Time to celebrate! Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford in the award ceremony scene from Star Wars: A New Hope (1977).

How are you feeling this December?
