Whitney LaBrie’s Creative Miniatures

While many of my favorite miniaturists construct homages to movies or TV shows, Whitney LaBrie is particularly creative. In addition to recreating exact scenes, she incorporates story details into her build. The 15-room dollhouse she is renovating is a good example. Each room has a movie or TV show as its theme.

The baby room is based on The Wizard of Oz. Some of its features — like the carpet painted to look like the yellow brick road — are directly from the movie, but others are not. She cleverly included the characters from the story as pieces of furniture, giving the crib Dorothy’s gingham checks and a silver dresser the Tin Man’s enamel heart.

Currently, she’s decorating the master bedroom using Willy Wonka and his chocolate factory for inspiration. She’s including details from both movies as well as the book. My favorite piece so far is the bed, which is a tribute to the boat in the 1971 film.

As I watch her decorate these rooms, I keep wondering what it would be like to have them life-sized. Would I have the guts to decorate a room in my house according to a theme the way she does here? Maybe not, but it’s fun to think about.

Have you ever decorated a room based on a book or movie?
