Martha Graham encourages us to make things and not worry about the results.

It’s easy to keep yourself from creating. All you have to think is “This has been done before” or “I’m not good enough.” But in a letter to Agnes de Mille, Martha Graham wrote the following:

There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium, and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that actuate you. Keep the channel open.

Martha Graham

She’s addressed both issues. Perhaps this has been done before, but it’s never been done by you. There is no one else exactly like you anywhere in time and space.

As for being good enough, she tells us this is not ours to worry about. It’s not our job to determine the value of the things we create, only to be open to our inspiration and to keep creating.

Keep the channel open. Let creativity flow through you and come out however feels best to you, and you will have done your part.
