The Badlands of South Dakota(photo by Kit Dunsmore) French trappers referred to parts of the American West as the Mauvaises Terres. Lazy translators turned it into the Badlands. Why not the Wicked Lands, the Nasty Lands, or even the Fiendish Lands? Of course, not all names should be translated. (Grand Tetons, I'm looking at you.)
