The Value of Persistence

When I get worn out by life, I like to stop, take a breath, and remind myself that the key isn’t to getting everything done at once. It’s in showing up repeatedly, showing up anyway. Half an hour writing every day gets me farther than occasional marathon sessions ever could.

Fortunately, others before me have realized this. I turn to them for reassurance and encouragement. Today’s encouraging quote:

Dripping water hollows out stone, not through force but through persistence.

Ovid

Water can carve stone a drop at a time. It just has to keep drip drip dripping.

In the same way, I can meet my goals. I just have to keep showing up and putting in today’s little bit of effort.

  1. Agreed. Still trying to wrap my head around the blogging habit. The “sit down and hammer out a post” sound like a great approach but might actually be less productive than the chipping away at it “one drop at a time”.

    1. I want to blast out my posts, but it turns out I can’t. I do much better if I work over a few days doing a little at a time. It lets me think more deeply. Hard to stick with a slower approach in our hurry-up world, but it also works. I also think of it as “chipping away.”

      1. So here is another strategy for “blasting the posts out”…, commit yourself publicly online to posting every day. Yes, it might be a bit radical and heavy-handed but for some of us, there is nothing like a public shaming to stay motivated. I am trying this strategy as part of my Project 366 ( https://thebirdsarecalling.com/2019/03/29/project-366/ )…, so far so good, but then again, it’s only been a few days. It’s a bit nerve-wracking…

      2. I can’t make a commitment like this. I have to keep me stress low for health reasons. But I know this works well for some people. I hope it rockets you to success!

      3. I have definitely tried this. I did post everyday when I first started my blog. Then life got in the way and before I knew a week went by between postings. It’s crazy how much time passes unnoticed. 😂
